ENERGYORLEN Nears Completion of Maritime Transshipment Terminal in Gdansk with Installation of Automated Filling Arms

ORLEN has completed the installation of eight automated filling arms, each weighing about 18 tons, for the transfer of raw materials and products between ships and refinery installations in Gdansk. This is a key phase in ORLEN Group’s investment – the construction of the Maritime Transshipment Terminal on the Dead Vistula River. The advancement of this project has already exceeded 75 percent.

The Maritime Transshipment Terminal for Oil Products on the Dead Vistula will improve the profitability and security of the supply of biocomponents for fuel production (bio-gasoline and biodiesel) and the transport of products produced in the Gdansk refinery. Its target capacities could reach up to 2 million tons of products per year. The value of the investment will amount to approximately PLN 500 million, with its completion planned for the second half of 2025.

“The terminal in Gdansk will service, among others, two key product streams: the receipt of biocomponents for biofuel production, which are currently delivered to the Gdansk refinery by rail, and the shipping of advanced second-generation base oils, which will be produced in the newly built HBO (Hydrocracking Block Oil) facility. It will also be used for transshipment of low-sulfur marine fuels MGO (Marine Gas Oil), intended for main engines and auxiliary equipment of vessels, as well as refinery intermediates. Access to the sea will increase our procurement and trading efficiency,” explains Łukasz Wojtaszek, Director of ORLEN Logistics Development Office.

The maritime terminal will relieve the railway siding operating on the plant premises, where the transport of products between the refinery and external transshipment points has hitherto been carried out. Currently, products are transported through external ports in Gdansk and Gdynia.

In the second half of July 2024, all loading arms were installed on the transshipment bridges of the 380-meter quay. In the future, it will service marine units of up to 130 meters in length, a draft depth of approximately 5.8 meters and a width of up to 17.6 meters. Two modern transshipment positions for the service of tankers will be created, each equipped with four bi-directional loading arms.

Currently, road and technological works are being carried out on the construction site, as well as the assembly of pipelines and footbridges that will connect the terminal with the refinery. Finishing works are underway in the technical facilities building, where the quay command center and auxiliary infrastructure will be located. Also, the assembly of switchboards, transformers and control cabinets for electrical, teletechnical and automation installations is being carried out.

“We are not only finished with the assembly of loading arms, but also the largest hydro-technical works. One of the more difficult tasks was immersing twelve powerful pipe dolphins of 1.8 m diameter in the docking line of the quay, each weighing 32 tons and almost 30 m long. We have also completed the concrete surface on the quay, cleaning the Dead Vistula basin, assembly of hydro-technical equipment and substructure for the concrete surface in the eastern part of the quay. Currently, we are building access slopes to the terminal. We are also assembling technological pipelines and transshipment bridges,” says Maciej Klecha, Site Manager from the NDI Group.

In the next stage, the assembly of masts with fire-extinguishing sections will be carried out on the quay, as well as fire-fighting fittings and finishing works in the technical facilities building. Subsequently, start-ups of control systems will be carried out. The general contractor for the investment is a consortium of companies from the NDI Group in Sopot, which is the leader along with Biproraf, BPBM “PROJMORS” and Dipl. Ing. SCHERZER GmbH.
