The District Court in Szczecin decided on Monday that popular YouTuber Kamil L., also widely known as Budda, along with his partner Aleksandra K., will be held in temporary custody until January 11, 2025. This decision was announced by Judge Michał Tomala, press spokesman for the District Court in Szczecin, after considering the appeals filed by the defendants and their lawyers. The rationale for the decision cites a number of significant factors that led to its determination.
After reviewing the defense’s appeals against the decisions made by the District Court in Szczecin regarding the application of temporary detention to Kamil L. and his partner, the court decided to uphold the decision. In a statement released by Judge Michał Tomala, it was explained that the gathered evidence suggests a high likelihood of the commission of crimes for which the suspects are accused. According to the court, the alleged crimes could have been committed as part of an organized criminal group, and the nature of the acts is related to a high risk of a penalty – exceeding eight years of imprisonment.
Concerns of Procedural Fraud
The court pointed out that one of the main reasons for deciding on temporary detention is the fear of procedural fraud. There is a risk that the suspects may attempt to unlawfully influence the collected evidence, as well as the possibility of their escape abroad. The prosecutor plans to carry out numerous procedural activities, which, according to the court, require the suspects’ isolation to ensure their effectiveness. Only in this way, according to the court, can the proper course of proceedings be guaranteed.
Shortened Detention Period
The detention period has been adjusted by one day – the decision shows that the suspects will remain in custody until January 11, and not, as initially planned, until January 12. Judge Tomala explained that this is due to the prosecutors’ request, who requested the application of detention until January 11, and the court could not rule to the detriment of the suspects.
Charges Related to an Organized Criminal Group
The charges against Kamil L. and his partner are related to their activities within an organized criminal group. The National Tax Administration filed a notification with the National Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin, indicating suspicion that the group may have been involved in VAT fraud and organizing illegal online gambling activities, such as internet lotteries.
Scale of Operations and Evidence
In relation to this case, a total of 10 persons were arrested, including the YouTuber, Budda. Several locations were searched, securing numerous pieces of evidence in the form of accounting documents and electronic records. More than 90 million zlotys were blocked in bank accounts of individuals and companies connected with the case. In addition, the authorities secured 51 vehicles worth over 38 million zlotys, real estate worth around 30 million zlotys, as well as gold bars and cash.
