The widespread use of generative artificial intelligence in business, the level of investment, and the innovations based on it may determine the economic position of countries and regions on the international stage. SAS, a global leader in data and AI, decided to check the current balance of power in this area. According to the report prepared for the company, China leads with 83% of organizations using GenAI. However, American companies distinguish themselves with a more mature approach to its implementation, often integrating intelligent applications with regular business processes. In European countries, an average of 47% of organizations use this technology, in Poland 48% which puts us in tenth place among all countries surveyed.

Differences in the implementation and use of generative artificial intelligence by enterprises worldwide is presented in a study conducted by Coleman Parkes on behalf of SAS, involving 1600 decision-makers from major global markets. The respondents represent various sectors, including banking, insurance, public sector, life sciences, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, energy, public utilities and services.

China: a leader in using GenAI

China ranks first in the ranking of countries where companies most often use GenAI, with 83% of organizations implementing this technology, ahead of the UK (70%) and the USA (65%). Generative AI is mainly used in the marketing, financial and legal departments, but it also has uses in IT, manufacturing or HR. Moreover, more than half (51%) of Chinese employees admit to using it daily, 27% once a week, and 12% once a month. 92% of organizations using or planning to use GenAI plan to continue investing in this technology.

The report also highlights the difference between using GenAI and fully implementing it, integrating this technology into regular business processes. In this classification, the USA may boast a more mature approach (24% vs 19% in China), leaving Europe far behind (7%).

“With any new technology, organizations must go through a discovery phase, separating media noise from reality, to understand the complex aspects of its implementation in the enterprise. We have reached this point with generative artificial intelligence”, says Bryan Harris, Executive Vice President and CTO at SAS. “Moving from the boom phase, it is now crucial to deliver replicable and trusted business results with GenAI”.

Finance and Telecom most likely to reach for GenAI

The study also indicates how individual sectors rank in terms of full implementation of GenAI and its integration into regular business processes. It turns out that the leaders in this area are organizations from the financial sector: banking (17%) and insurance (11%), but also telecommunication services (15%). The latter also lead the ranking of companies that use GenAI on a daily basis (29%).

Most survey participants confirm that they have already experienced significant benefits: 89% say that GenAI has improved the comfort and satisfaction of employees; 82% admit that it saves operational costs; and 82% believe that the level of customer retention is higher.

GenAI in Poland

SAS asked the same questions to companies in Poland. The survey results indicate that Poles are eager to benefit from the development of technology. 48% of businesses in our country use generative artificial intelligence, and 46% of Polish organizations want to implement GenAI in the next two years. Only 6% of Polish companies do not use it at all and do not plan investments in this area.

Generative artificial intelligence in Poland is most often used by marketing departments (47%), sales (34%) and IT (26%), and implementations are planned in areas such as R&D (60%), manufacturing (53%) and finance (53%).

Among the Polish respondents, there are concerns related to the use of generative artificial intelligence, especially when it comes to data privacy (72%) and their security (70%), as well as the explainability and accuracy of results (66%). Unfortunately, Poland does not do too well when it comes to implementing policies related to GenAI. Only 6% of respondents indicated that their organizations fully comply with current and announced regulations.

As organizations continue to experiment with GenAI, the real value will come down to identifying its real use cases that will provide measurable business benefits. It is necessary to start with a solid, business justification for the implementation of GenAI and identifying specific areas and processes where it can help the most.
