The defense industry has the potential to be a driving factor for economic growth. Moreover, it is a sector that often leads in the search for new technologies. Therefore, the defense industry can play a pivotal role in the economy – regardless of whether there is a war in Ukraine or not. This is also independent of how much Poland will spend on armaments – but how well-managed and competitive the Polish defense industry is.
“If the defense industry is not competitive, it will not be able to produce modern weapons that meet contemporary requirements,” said Prof. Witold OrÅ‚owski, economist and Chancellor of the Vistula University of Finance and Business, in an interview with eNewsroom.pl. “Even significantly larger defense expenditures will be spent on the purchase of equipment abroad, not in Poland. So, in which areas is the Polish defense industry competitive? Unfortunately, there are many symptoms that indicate that enterprises in our state sector are overwhelmingly unable to take advantage of the large amounts of defense funding. We had a truly shocking example when our companies barely applied for the announced tender for European Union co-financing for ammunition production. This is thought-provoking, although I would say everything is still ahead of us. I am certain that this sector can be resurrected and improved,” assesses Prof. OrÅ‚owski.
