The Coalition for Polish Wood welcomes the draft regulation put forward by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, introducing new rules related to the quality and dimensional characteristics of energy wood. The regulation, in line with the spirit of the EU’s RED III directive, promotes the cascading use of wood, which could significantly reduce the use of wood for energy purposes and therefore lessen the problem with its availability for wood product manufacturers. However, representatives of the Coalition underscore that the draft regulation still requires some work and clarification on issues that might eventually cause disputes.
The Coalition believes that using any type of tree fiber for energy purposes, which could serve as raw material for further processing in industry, represents a significant loss for manufacturing businesses and the Polish economy. Wood is a valuable resource that should be appropriately used to support the development of the timber industry and achieve sustainable development goals. Therefore, industry organizations and manufacturers affiliated with the Coalition for Polish Wood appreciate the initiative of the Ministry of Climate and Environment and consider it a step in the right direction to decrease the deficit of timber, essential for the development of Polish industry. At the same time, they hope their remarks regarding some of the regulation’s provisions will be taken into account to eliminate ambiguities and potential interpretation issues.
The Coalition emphasizes that limiting the use of wood for energy purposes should not decrease timber harvesting in the coming years.
“Wood is a fully renewable and environmentally friendly material. We cannot allow it to run out if we want to develop a green economy, in line with the goals of the European Union” – reminds Michał Strzelecki, director of the Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers.
The Coalition for Polish Wood hopes that this will be the beginning of a productive and substantive partnership with the Ministry of Climate and Environment regarding the long-term policy of managing wood resources in Poland.
