AI, commonly known as artificial intelligence, or perhaps anxiety intelligence? As demonstrated in the latest EY study, the widespread implementation of innovative solutions raises anxiety among 71% of employees. The sources of concern include ethical and legal risks as well as the possibility of losing a job or a chance for promotion. Almost half of the respondents (48%) stated they are more concerned about artificial intelligence than a year before. On the other hand, most respondents believe that this technology will make them more productive (81%).

While various forms of artificial intelligence have been in use for many years, the introduction of GenAI proved to be a breakthrough. The growing level of usage of this solution has led to increasing voices about the threats it poses to the labor market and business competitiveness. According to the latest EY study – AI Anxiety in Business – more than two thirds (71%) fear this technology. Almost half of the respondents (48%) are also more worried about artificial intelligence than a year ago, and 41% of this group believe that it is developing too fast.

At the same time, respondents point out the positive aspects of using AI solutions. As many as 90% of them use at least one on a daily basis, with the most popular tool being generative artificial intelligence (54%), followed by chatbots (45%) and virtual assistants (44%). They believe that implementing the latest technology will make them more efficient (82%) and more productive (81%).

Considering the increasing uncertainty associated with the use of AI in the workplace, both employees and companies are preparing for disruptions. The EY study shows that 75% of respondents fear that artificial intelligence will render some professions obsolete. At the same time, two-thirds (65%) worry that it will take away their job. Respondents are aware that technology will definitely affect their financial well-being and professional development. According to 72%, they will receive lower compensation, and 67% believe that they will lose the chance for promotion due to lack of knowledge about AI use.

AI development, apart from fear, also brings the desire to try out new solutions. The EY study shows that 67% of employees personally pushed for the implementation of artificial intelligence in their organization. Moreover, they expect specific actions from their superiors, as 73% of respondents believe that their company does not offer enough training. Even more worrying is that 63% fear they will not have access to opportunities to understand AI technology more closely.

The AI Anxiety in Business survey was conducted online from October 5-16, 2023, among 1000 American female and male employees working full or part-time.
