LAWPolish Funeral Industry Calls for Funeral Allowance Increase to 8,000 PLN with Annual Valorization

The Polish Chamber of Funeral Industry on the statements of the ministers of finance and family: the funeral allowance should be at least 8 thousand and be valorized every year.

“The funeral allowance proposed recently by the finance minister is already too low to cover the costs of a funeral today, and without annual valorization, it deepens the entire problem related to it,” states the Polish Chamber of Funeral Industry (PIBP). The Chamber has repeatedly appealed to the authorities to increase this amount. Representatives of the parties in the ruling coalition have repeatedly promised to increase it. “Today, it should be at least 8 thousand zlotys,” believes PIBP.

The PIBP, which is a member of the Federation of Polish Entrepreneurs (FPP), has been fighting for years to increase the funeral allowance. Its valorization has been promised several times by the parties in the ruling coalition.

Can less than 6 and a half thousand zlotys be enough, and even without valorization?

The finance minister recently addressed this issue. On Polsat News, he stated that this amount should be 6 450 zł, and when asked about its valorization, he replied: “there is no such need.”

“The funeral allowance proposed recently by the finance minister is already too low today to cover the burial costs, and without annual valorization, it will deepen the entire problem related to it,” says Robert Czyżak, president of the PIBP.

A further proposal was made by the Ministry of Family, Labour, and Social Policy. According to their proposal, the funeral allowance would increase to 7,000 zlotys and would undergo valorization. “Today, it should be at least 8 thousand zlotys,” believes the president of the PIBP.

Currently, it is still around 4 thousand zlotys.

Moreover, PIBP highlights the need for legal regulations in the funeral industry.

In 2019, the PIBP and FPP prepared a report on the state of the funeral industry. “We pointed out the urgent need to regulate the functioning of companies operating in the funeral sector. The objective of these regulations would be, among others, the elimination of the so-called grey zone, because – as our assessment shows – in just one year the State Treasury loses over 3 billion zlotys annually due to the operation of such companies neglecting industry standards,” admits Robert Czyżak.

The draft amendment to the Funeral Law has been ready for almost a year and a half. However, it still remains in the so-called “government freezer”.
