ENERGYORLEN Boosts Natural Gas Production: New Compressor Station at Kościan-Brońsko Mine Launched

ORLEN has finalized the construction of a natural gas pumping station at the Kościan-Brońsko Mine (Wielkopolskie voivodeship). The launch of the compressor complex allows for an increase in natural gas extraction from already exploited deposits by an additional 10 billion cubic meters. This could extend the mine’s operation by several years.

– ORLEN is aiming to increase domestic production of natural gas. This goal is a fundamental element in ensuring uninterrupted supply of this raw material to customers in Poland. We are constantly looking for new deposits, but also intensifying the extraction from existing ones, which is a part of optimizing the use of already operating mining infrastructure. The construction of a gas pumping station at the Kościan-Brońsko Mine is an excellent example of the success of such a project. We are developing the exploration and extraction segment in the ORLEN Group, utilizing our best experiences, knowledge, and technology. This is facilitated by the integration of previously scattered national mining assets into one company – ORLEN Upstream Poland – says the board member of ORLEN responsible for Upstream, Wiesław Prugar.

The investment uses a number of synergies, such as recovering heat generated in technological processes which aligns with the long-term goals of the energy transformation strategy. Such a solution allows for the decommissioning of an existing gas boiler room and savings in gas consumption for heating purposes.

The Kościan and Brońsko natural gas deposits were discovered between 1995–1998, and natural gas extraction started in 2002. Initial resources of both deposits were estimated at about 35 billion cubic meters. Thanks to the construction of the pumping station, another stage of exploiting the largest natural gas deposit complex in the Polish Lowlands is now beginning.

The ORLEN Group conducts exploratory and mining activities and has upstream assets on four continents – in Europe in addition to Poland it includes Norway, Lithuania and Ukraine, in North America – Canada, in Asia – Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, and Africa – Libya. Documented hydrocarbon resources, which the concern had at the end of 2023, amounted to about 1.3 million boe. Activities are carried out based on approximately 360 licenses in 239 deposits. In 2023, domestic natural gas production was approximately 3.4 billion cubic meters of gas, covering 20% of Poland’s needs. Meanwhile, the combined production from ORLEN’s domestic and foreign group deposits was approx. 7.1 billion cubic meters, which corresponded to 42 percent of our country’s demand.
