ENERGYORLEN begins sales of HVO100 biofuel in Germany

The ORLEN Group has begun selling HVO100 fuel at its first two stations in Germany. This second-generation biofuel is produced from vegetable oils and waste from the food processing and catering industries, including used cooking oils. It allows the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 percent compared to its fossil equivalent. HVO100 can be used in most diesel-engine vehicles without any necessary modifications. The introduction of HVO100 in Poland will be possible after the completion of ongoing legislative work regarding quality requirements.

HVO100 fuel is available at two locations: Boizenburg on the Elbe and Achim near Bremen. In the near future, sales will be expanded to additional stations in Germany. The group is also preparing to introduce HVO100 fuel to its offer in the Czech Republic, where it is legally possible. In the wholesale segment in the Czech Republic, sales are set to start in the first quarter of 2025. HVO100 fuel will be distributed from the Paramo terminal in Pardubice, where preparations are currently underway. The sale of this fuel in the retail segment is also being considered.

In Poland, similar legislative work is currently underway. The objective is to define quality requirements for HVO100 and to subject it to full quality control conducted by the Trade Inspection. In Europe, this fuel can already be purchased in Finland, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Latvia among others.

At the same time, construction of a facility to produce HVO is well advanced in Płock. The facility, designed to process a wide range of lipid feedstocks, including rape oil (RSO) and used cooking oil (UCO), among others, will have a capacity of 300,000 tons of finished biocomponent annually. The total cost of the investment is estimated at about 600 million PLN. There are also plans to build infrastructure for the HEFA biocomponent for aviation fuel (SAF) at the Production Plant in Płock.

The launch of the HVO100 sales fits into ORLEN Group’s strategic goal of systematic development of a sustainable fuel offer and reduction of CO2 emissions.
