ORLEN again in UN Global Compact

COMPANIESORLEN again in UN Global Compact

After a several year hiatus, ORLEN has once again become part of the global UN Global Compact initiative, overseen by the United Nations. This is the largest global initiative, focusing on businesses operating in favor of sustainable development.

Joining the UN Global Compact is a clear signal for investors and ORLEN partners, increasing the credibility of the Corporation’s actions toward sustainable development. It contributes to an improved perception of the Corporation by the public, as well as the strengthening of market credibility, all thanks to a commitment to respect UN Global Compact principles, increasingly crucial in investor and partner evaluations related to ESG issues.

– ORLEN first joined the organisation in 2003, just 3 years after its establishment by the UN, but the corporation left for unknown and challenging to understand reasons 5 years ago. The decision to return was a natural step on the path to strengthening ORLEN Group’s international importance. Implementing the Ten Principles of the UNGC in the areas of environment, human rights, and corporate governance is consistent with our organization’s philosophy and represents openness to continuous improvement. It also allows us to promote these values among our employees by providing access to specialized publications and tools provided by the UN Global Compact Academy – emphasizes Ireneusz Fąfara, CEO of ORLEN.

What are the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact? They are divided into areas encompassing human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption.

Firstly – supporting and respecting internationally accepted human rights. Secondly – eliminating all instances of human rights infringement by the company. Third – Respect for freedom of association. Fourth – Elimination of all forms of forced labor. Fifth – acting towards the actual abolition of child labor. Sixth – effective action against employment discrimination. Seventh – a preventative approach to the natural environment. Eighth – initiating activities aimed at promoting ecologically responsible attitudes. Ninth – application and proliferation of environmentally friendly technologies. Tenth – combating corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is the largest global initiative bringing business together to support sustainable development. Since its inauguration in 2000 by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, over 25,000 members from 170 countries have joined the initiative. UN Global Compact cooperates with governments, public administration, private sector, NGOs and research institutions, including over 220 entities from Poland.
