Polenergia will provide renewable energy to approximately 24,000 InPost parcel lockers in Poland, as well as powering a significant portion of a 1,300-strong fleet of electric vehicles and delivery offices. The green energy for InPost will be generated by the Dębsk Wind Farm – one of the largest wind farms in Poland – which is owned by Polenergia.
InPost is actively working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – both its own and those generated in the supply chain. In 2023, the InPost Group adopted a Decarbonisation Strategy, validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative, committing to a minimum 90% reduction in emissions from 2021 levels and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.
The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a critical step towards working with 100% zero-emission electricity. The contracted volume will allow greening the energy used in all InPost parcel locker devices in Poland and greening a significant proportion of the electricity used by electric vehicles, offices, and sorting centers, contributing to a CO2e emissions reduction of almost 125,000 tonnes.
“The PPA agreement with Polenergia is a very important step in implementing our Decarbonisation Strategy. Thanks to this green energy, by 2025, our network of InPost parcel lockers in Poland will be operating in a zero-emission manner. Moreover, the ongoing investment in an electric fleet will bring expected reductions, which would not have been possible with conventional energy sources. This project will reduce InPost Group’s CO2 emissions, but also the average emissions per delivery, which is key for our customers and business partners,” says Izabela Karolczyk-Szafrańska, Chief Marketing & ESG Officer of InPost Group.
“In 2023, all InPost parcel lockers were powered by green energy, thanks to the purchase and retirement of Guarantees of Origin, which certify that the energy comes from renewable sources – wind and sun. These activities will continue in 2024. The PPA agreement we signed with Polenergia, however, has another aspect, as it will help in implementing new investments in renewable energy sources,” adds Izabela Karolczyk-Szafrańska.
Debsk Wind Farm, with a capacity of 121 MW and is going to generate the energy for InPost, is the largest onshore OZE investment in Polenergia’s history and one of the largest wind farms in Poland. The estimated annual electricity production is approximately 366 GWh – equivalent to the annual electricity demand of over 183,000 households.
“This is a landmark deal for Poland’s e-commerce sector. Thanks to the agreement with Polenergia, nearly 24,000 InPost parcel lockers in Poland will be exclusively powered with green energy, generated from our renewable sources. Clean energy provided by Polenergia will also significantly power the 1,300-strong fleet of electric vehicles, offices and sorting centers of InPost, contributing to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. We are thrilled to have gained the trust of such a respected and recognized brand on the European market. We share not only a green energy agreement but also common values. InPost joins the ranks of Polenergia’s business partners for whom decarbonization and zero emissions are absolute priorities,” says Piotr Maciołek, Board Member of Polenergia S.A.
“The signing of the PPA demonstrates the importance of a comprehensive approach to sourcing OZE energy and reaching a broad set of green energy producers. Thanks to a well-developed energy strategy, a thorough need and risk analysis, and the adequate handling of tax and accounting issues, the transaction process went smoothly with our participation,” point out Robert Karczmarczyk and Kamil Janczyk, experts from Deloitte, who advised the InPost Group during the signing process.
In recent years, the InPost Group has implemented several initiatives to reduce energy consumption in its operations – every new model of InPost parcel locker uses less electricity. It also introduces autonomous devices, i.e. parcel lockers equipped with photovoltaic panels and energy storage systems, capable of generating energy for itself and several nearby devices.
InPost’s new warehouses use modern systems for managing and controlling energy consumption, and also install photovoltaic panels. It is also seeking zero-emission methods of heating – in several facilities, heat pumps have been used instead of gas heating in office and warehouse parts.
It continues to grow its fleet of electric vehicles. Currently, there are about 1,300, mainly van courier, but also passenger cars. Recently, an electric tractor unit has also joined the fleet.
The negotiations were supported by WKB law firm as an advisor to InPost Group.
