CPI inflation in the U.S. reached 2.5% year-over-year in August. The inflation rate has been declining for consecutive months, getting closer to the target. Today’s reading is not surprising and doesn’t significantly change the situation on its own.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has suggested that inflation is on a steady path back to the target, and for now, there are no concerns that this trend will reverse. A rate cut during next week’s Fed meeting seems almost certain, likely by 25 basis points.
Regarding future interest rate decisions, more attention will be focused on labor market data rather than inflation readings.
