FINANCEBlik: Polish Payment Giant Aims for Global Expansion After Reaching Unicorn Status

Blik is extremely popular in Poland, largely due to its utility not only as a standalone payment system, but also because of its strong ties to e-commerce. Its benefit is referred to as embedded finance – that is, you can pay with Blik when purchasing goods in a marketplace, subscribing to a service, or reimbursing friends for costs at a restaurant. Blik is an integral part of the purchasing process – and since it’s easy, enjoyable, and secure, it’s the choice of the majority of Poles. Blik now has a “unicorn” value, meaning around 1 billion euros.

“Ten years ago, when a few of us, including bank presidents, founded Blik, we didn’t know that a mature, ten-year-old ‘child’ would grow out of it,” Zbigniew Jagiełło, a manager, strategist, and innovator, told eNewsroom.pl. “Blik is no longer a start-up, it’s developing perfectly. As a member of the Supervisory Board, I try to support the management in international expansion, which is more difficult. The beginnings are always a challenge – we need to define what we need to do to achieve the same success as in Poland. We must make attempts and make mistakes. Currently, the activation of the Blik idea has begun in Slovakia and a similar trial in Romania. Blik in foreign markets will compete on similar terms as in Poland – that is, ease of use and high level of security for customers. And these two features cause people to want to use Blik. They want to use this form of payment easily and safely. Our goal is for the value of Blik to reach 5 billion or more by the end of this decade,” predicts Zbigniew Jagiełło.
