Westinghouse Electric Company and the MVM Group have signed a contract aimed at diversifying fuel supplies in Hungary. The agreement guarantees the Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP Paks) deliveries of VVER fuel produced at Westinghouse’s European facilities. Deliveries of VVER-440 reload fuel will begin in 2028, once the necessary licenses are obtained.
“Our agreement with Westinghouse is a clear response to current energy challenges and further strengthens the role of Hungary’s key power plant in ensuring the country’s energy supply. This strategically important step will make the operation of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant even safer and more flexible. Diversifying fuel supplies reduces dependence on external factors, ensures predictability, and provides affordable energy for households and corporate customers,” said Károly Mátrai, CEO of the MVM Group.
“We look forward to the first Westinghouse VVER fuel deliveries to Paks and to working with Hungary in achieving its fuel diversification goals,” said Tarik Choho, President of Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel. “With this agreement, we are now serving all VVER operators in Europe and Ukraine, helping our customers strengthen their security of supply.”
Westinghouse is a proven supplier of VVER-440 fuel. The company delivered its first newly designed fuel to the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, to the Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant in Finland, and earlier to the Dukovany NPP in the Czech Republic. Other recipients of VVER-1000 fuel include the Kozloduy NPP in Bulgaria, the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and South Ukraine NPPs in Ukraine, as well as the Temelín NPP in the Czech Republic.
