Westinghouse Electric Company has placed orders with Polish suppliers to involve them in the work on the AP1000® project at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site, where the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant is planned. These contracts were concluded by Westinghouse in October 2024 with pre-selected domestic suppliers, including two companies from the Pomerania region.
The suppliers receiving the orders include Mostostal Kielce, Mostostal Kraków, ZKS Ferrum, Famak S.A. Kluczbork, and companies within the Grupa Przemysłowa Baltic group, such as Energomontaż-Północ Gdynia S.A. and Baltic Operator Sp. z o.o. Additionally, an order is planned shortly for Mostostal Siedlce, part of the Polimex Mostostal Group. The scope of the orders includes ensuring quality standards, implementing nuclear safety culture principles, preparing documentation for creating models of components that form part of the AP1000 reactor’s structural modules, and potentially producing these models to verify their quality. Beyond participating in Poland’s AP1000 project, these orders open opportunities for suppliers to engage in other projects across Europe and beyond.

The selection of companies, completed in April 2024, was conducted transparently and competitively, meeting the quality requirements for nuclear island equipment. This process is part of the preparations for the implementation phase of the project at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site. Westinghouse received support from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), the state-owned company responsible for nuclear power plant construction in Poland, during the supplier selection process.

We are focused on maximizing the participation of domestic companies in our project’s supply chain. Poland selected the AP1000 technology for its first nuclear power plant project in November 2022. To prepare for this significant undertaking, two cooperation agreements with Westinghouse were signed starting in March 2023. The project is currently progressing with intensive work on technology licensing and plant design.
The AP1000 reactor is the only operational Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems, a modular design, and the smallest footprint per megawatt of installed capacity among reactors available on the market. In addition to two power-generating units in the U.S. at the Vogtle plant in Georgia, four AP1000 reactors are setting operational performance records in China. Eight more are under construction, with four additional reactors contracted. The AP1000 technology has been selected for nuclear energy programs in Poland, Ukraine, and Bulgaria, and is being considered for several other locations in Central and Eastern Europe, the UK, India, and North America. By the end of the decade, 18 AP1000-based units are expected to be operational worldwide.
