Ukraine has reportedly developed a new, highly classified weapon with a range of up to 500 kilometers and has even conducted space-related operations during the ongoing conflict, according to striking statements made by a representative of the Verkhovna Rada. These revelations suggest an unprecedented technological leap within the country’s defense industry.
According to Fedir Venislavskyi, a member of the parliamentary Committee on National Security, Kyiv possesses missile systems whose existence was “known to almost no one.” Speaking to RBC-Ukraine and Ukrainska Pravda, the lawmaker indicated that hypersonic missiles have already been tested in combat conditions. With an estimated range of around 500 kilometers, these systems could pose a significant threat to strategic targets located far beyond the front line.
The most surprising element of Venislavskyi’s remarks concerns Ukraine’s activities beyond Earth’s atmosphere. He revealed that two rocket launches had been carried out from Ukrainian territory after the start of the full-scale invasion.
The first payload reportedly crossed the Kármán line, generally recognized as the boundary of space at an altitude of 100 kilometers. The second mission reached an altitude of as much as 204 kilometers. Both launches were officially recorded by technical monitoring systems. According to Venislavskyi, these were not merely test flights but missions of a combat nature, carried out by units of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR).
Ukraine is also said to be experimenting with “air-launch” technology, which involves deploying launch vehicles from transport aircraft flying at an altitude of approximately 8,000 meters. Such an approach significantly enhances operational flexibility by reducing dependence on ground-based infrastructure, which remains vulnerable to attack or destruction. It also allows for rapid deployment under changing battlefield conditions.
Experts note that these disclosures point to Ukraine’s broader ambition to achieve greater operational independence. At the core of this strategy is an ongoing discussion about establishing dedicated space forces and developing a national satellite network. Such capabilities would provide Kyiv with information sovereignty, a critical factor for modern reconnaissance and secure communications.
Although Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has not yet issued an official statement confirming these claims, the very release of such detailed information carries considerable political weight. It signals that, despite the strain of a prolonged war, Ukraine’s defense sector has not only endured but is advancing into areas of technology traditionally dominated by the world’s leading military powers.
If the reports regarding hypersonic missiles and successful suborbital missions are fully verified, they would mark a fundamental shift in Ukraine’s military capabilities. The country would be transitioning from a state reliant on Western-supplied equipment toward a regional leader in advanced strike technologies.
