Artificial intelligence is redefining the structure of business, and the IT labour market is changing under its influence. The debate over whether demand for junior and mid-level programmers will decline dramatically often misses the central issue. The key development is a change in how we define the skills expected of employees, regardless of their level of experience.
Programming expertise is becoming less about writing every line of code independently. An increasing share of the work involves reviewing solutions generated by artificial intelligence, designing agent-based systems and identifying errors in logic that no member of the team created manually.
The emphasis is shifting from creation to verification. Today, programmers are responsible not only for the code they write themselves, but also for the code they review and approve.
This transformation is not limited to technical roles. When working with business leaders to design processes involving artificial intelligence, we observe exactly the same pattern outside IT. Companies are now recruiting for operational and sales positions with the expectation that candidates will possess analytical skills that, until recently, were largely associated with engineering teams.
Participants in our workshops—including professionals responsible for customer service, sales and operations—must ask crucial questions from the very beginning of the process-mapping stage: Where will the AI agent obtain the information it needs? On what basis will it make a decision? At what point must the case be transferred to a human employee?
These questions must be answered by business professionals because they remain responsible for the quality of the process in which the technology operates.
As a result, a customer service consultant may analyse an AI agent’s decision trail rather than simply follow a conversation script. A business analyst, meanwhile, must be able to break a process down into its fundamental components—including decisions, rules, exceptions and dependencies—before an agent can become involved.
In both cases, the same capability becomes essential: the ability to supervise and correct decisions made autonomously by a system.
This capability is now becoming a source of competitive advantage for both technology providers and the companies implementing their solutions.
Technology providers, however, are undergoing a process of selection. The number of businesses with “AI” in their names is growing faster than the number of engineers capable of designing agents that can withstand real-world production conditions.
Creating an impressive demonstration in which AI responds efficiently to straightforward questions is one thing. The real test is developing technology that can serve genuine customers for months, make hundreds of decisions every day and avoid mistakes in critical situations.
For companies implementing artificial intelligence, the conclusion is more practical: there is not yet an established labour market of experienced specialists in supervising AI agents.
Organisations managing this transition most effectively are therefore developing these capabilities among their existing employees—the people who understand the company’s processes best and are able to challenge a system’s decision before it causes a serious problem.
