SECURITYThe European Union is working on protection against disinformation

Fake news, disinformation – the spread of false information on the internet – is a widespread and dangerous phenomenon today. It is possible to falsify anyone’s voice, ballot cards, and even influence democratic elections. Such disinformation destroys democracy. Unfortunately, disinformation is disseminated in many areas. Therefore, all public services should engage in protecting citizens from disinformation – not just politicians, lawyers, IT specialists – but also counterintelligence, special services, and the military. Regardless of legal and technological solutions – everyone should be very vigilant, you need to check the information, think critically, not be manipulated. It’s not easy, but one must learn this.

“Each of us should learn to think critically. Each of us should check information in several sources and not repeat the first information immediately by clicking,” said Magdalena Adamowicz, Member of the European Parliament, Doctor of Legal Sciences, to eNewsroom.pl during EFNI 2024. “Because there are many pages, domains, which strikingly resemble the websites of government institutions, websites that inspire trust. And it turns out that these are sites spreading fake news. Currently, we are working on this in the European Parliament – we want to introduce appropriate marking of sites that are credible, which publish verified information. Thanks to this, everyone will know that such information is reliable. We are also considering establishing a dedicated institution, an office – that would protect society from the negative effects of disinformation,” explains MEP Dr. Magdalena Adamowicz.
