Storage is one of the biggest challenges for residents of Warsaw and the surrounding area, while kitchens remain a centre of family life and living rooms are used mainly for relaxation and entertaining guests. IKEA says findings from household visits and research shaped the largest redesign of its Janki store in years.

According to the study, 59% of respondents live in multi-family buildings and 41% in houses. The average apartment in a block has 51.9 sq m. Kitchens average 10.5 sq m, although one in three is no larger than 7 sq m, while the average living room has 21.2 sq m.

For 83% of respondents, the living room is used for relaxation and watching television, 74% use it for receiving guests and 60% also use it as a dining room. Only 21% use the living room for work.

New housing and changing needs

Warsaw delivered 19,800 new homes in 2025, up 33.4% from a year earlier. Another 6,900 homes were completed in the first half of 2026. IKEA says the city’s housing stock ranges from historic tenements and large-panel blocks to new developments, houses and apartments, creating very different design needs.

The Janki store redesign covers more than 4,500 sq m and includes 48 new room settings, including four complete apartments. The displays focus on kitchens, storage, home working and difficult spaces.

IKEA is also expanding smaller retail formats in Poland and plans to open a compact store in Białystok, following a similar format launched in Bielsko-Biała in October 2025.
