Many are debating whether it would be better for Poland to purchase a larger quantity of F-16 aircraft instead of the more expensive F-35 jets. However, the F-16 is gradually reaching the limits of its upgrade potential in its latest iterations. Meanwhile, the modern battlefield is becoming increasingly digital, requiring weaponry tailored to contemporary and even future combat scenarios.
Given this context, Poland may need more F-35 aircraft than currently planned. Unfortunately, such decisions are often compromises between aspirations and budgetary constraints. For now, the planned purchases of F-35 jets must suffice, supplemented by capabilities provided by other NATO member states. Countries like the Netherlands and Norway are already operating the F-35, enabling joint operations, such as those conducted for air defense in the Baltic states. The F-35 is designed for such missions and will play a crucial role in these efforts.
The Role of the F-35 in Modern Air Defense
“When discussing air defense, a key element of the future arsenal is the F-35 II Lightning, a fifth-generation fighter jet already in use by several militaries worldwide,” said Colonel (Ret.) Maciej Matysiak, an expert from the Stratpoints Foundation and former Deputy Head of Poland’s Military Counterintelligence Service (SKW), in an interview with eNewsroom.pl.
“Will the F-35 fundamentally enhance Poland’s air defense and increase our military capabilities? Can we fully integrate its potential into our armed forces? While the F-35 is a highly advanced aircraft, it is just one part of a broader system. We should not view the purchase of F-35s as a standalone acquisition. It involves not just procurement but also training and the integration of these jets into the entire air defense and armed forces system,” explained Matysiak.
Beyond Air Defense: The Multifunctional Role of the F-35
The F-35 is not just an air defense asset but a multipurpose platform designed for modern warfare. It can attack targets, establish air superiority, gather intelligence, and share real-time data with other components of the military. These include KRAB self-propelled howitzers, advanced tanks, anti-aircraft systems, artillery, and various military units.
This seamless exchange of information creates a comprehensive battlefield and airspace picture, enabling different assets to respond more effectively to potential adversaries. “This is what we call battlefield awareness and airspace visualization. It ensures that all resources can react as efficiently as possible to threats,” Matysiak said.
A Systemic Approach
Integrating the F-35 into Poland’s defense framework will involve a systemic approach. The aircraft’s capabilities extend far beyond air defense, contributing to joint operations and enhancing the overall effectiveness of Poland’s military. By leveraging its advanced features, including intelligence gathering and data sharing, the F-35 can significantly enhance Poland’s defense capabilities in coordination with other NATO allies.
