EDUCATIONRoberta Metsola Awarded Honorary Doctorate by Lodz University of Technology

On June 20, 2025, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, was awarded an honorary doctorate (doctor honoris causa) by Lodz University of Technology. The title was conferred by Rector Professor Krzysztof Jóźwik as a tribute to Metsola’s unwavering commitment to European unity, the defense of democratic values, and her steadfast stance in the face of threats to Europe’s security. Lodz University of Technology is the first institution in Poland to bestow this distinguished honor upon the Maltese politician.

A Symbolic Honor in Challenging Times

As emphasized by Rector Jóźwik, the decision to grant the honorary title reflects a deep belief in the importance of upholding shared values and courageous leadership.
This is a special recognition of her commitment to the European community—something we need more than ever today. It also demonstrates that we are united by common values, with the future of the next generations in mind, said Professor Jóźwik.

A Speech Filled with Hope

During the ceremony, Roberta Metsola spoke of the importance of courage and unity in today’s Europe.
Europe needs the courage to embrace the strength of three words that shaped my generation – “Do not be afraid,” she said, referring to the words of Saint John Paul II.
She also acknowledged Poland’s history and the contributions of its people to democracy and science.
From the factories of Łódź to the Gdańsk shipyards; from the discoveries of Marie Skłodowska-Curie to the triumph of democracy in Poland—you have shown what is possible when people believe in something greater than themselves. That spirit and hope are what Europe needs today, she added.

Recognition for Support of Ukraine and Democracy

The university also praised Metsola for her role in strengthening European institutions and for her resolute response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
The President of the European Parliament reminded the audience that the war in Ukraine is not merely a regional conflict.
It is an attack on all of us and on our values: the ideals of sovereignty, democracy, and freedom. This is our shared struggle, she stated.

Profile of the Honoree

Roberta Metsola was born on January 18, 1979, in St. Julian’s, Malta. She graduated from the University of Malta and the College of Europe in Bruges. In 2013, she was elected to the European Parliament for the first time as a member of Malta’s Nationalist Party. In 2020, she became the First Vice-President of the European Parliament, and in 2022, she was elected its President—the youngest person ever to hold the post and the first woman from Malta to do so.

The honorary doctorate from Lodz University of Technology is yet another testament to her distinguished public service and a symbolic gesture of support for the values she represents: solidarity, democracy, and European unity.
