Vladimir Putin has declared that the American proposal to end the war in Ukraine could serve as a basis for further negotiations, but simultaneously warned that if Ukrainian forces do not withdraw from the territories demanded by Russia, the Kremlin “will achieve this by force,” NBC News reports.
In Washington, concern is growing over the military trajectory of the conflict. U.S. official Daniel Driscoll has warned European diplomats that Russia is currently producing missiles faster than it can use them, allowing Moscow to build up long-range stockpiles. According to The New York Times, this poses an increasing threat not only to Ukraine but also to NATO’s eastern-flank countries.
Next week, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow to hold talks on an updated version of the American peace proposal. Meanwhile, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stress that the current front line must serve as the starting point for any peace talks, rejecting Russia’s demands for a Ukrainian withdrawal.
