The Central Statistical Office (GUS) has published updated data on the finances of the general government sector for the years 2021–2024. According to the latest estimates, the sector’s deficit in 2024 amounted to PLN 236.6 billion, equivalent to 6.5% of GDP. Public debt reached PLN 2.01 trillion, or 55.1% of gross domestic product. Both indicators were revised slightly downward compared to the figures released in April 2025.
Historical data for 2021–2023 was also adjusted, as GUS updated its methodology for estimating social insurance contributions and reclassified certain entities into the general government sector. The central government recorded by far the highest deficit among all subsectors — PLN 243.9 billion, or 6.7% of GDP, in 2024. Notably, local governments reported a surplus of PLN 14.1 billion over the same period, equivalent to 0.4% of GDP. The social security funds subsector ended the year with a loss of PLN 6.8 billion.
Both revenues and expenditures increased relative to GDP compared with the previous year. In 2024, general government revenues reached PLN 1.57 trillion, representing 43.0% of GDP — up from 41.7% a year earlier. Expenditures amounted to PLN 1.81 trillion, or 49.4% of GDP. This means that the gap between revenues and spending has widened further, signaling a continuation of expansionary fiscal policy.
