In 2024, PKP Intercity received 40 new locomotives and 77 modernized carriages, which have been incorporated into the timetable and are now operating with passengers on board. The company has also ordered rolling stock worth PLN 11.8 billion gross. In 2025, the carrier plans to acquire 38 new locomotives and 119 modernized carriages, including 95 COMBO carriages. Additionally, in 2025, PKP Intercity will invest PLN 292 million net in the development of its own infrastructure.

More Comfortable Trains

In 2024, PKP Intercity’s rolling stock fleet was expanded with 40 new locomotives manufactured in Nowy Sącz by NEWAG S.A. The fleet includes 25 vehicles capable of speeds up to 160 km/h and 15 capable of 200 km/h, all of which have been integrated into the timetable and are operating across Poland. The carrier also received 77 modernized carriages, refurbished by H. Cegielski – Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych and PKP Intercity Remtrak.

Moreover, 15 COMBO carriages have been equipped with vending machines offering hot and cold drinks as well as snacks. These enhancements improve passenger comfort by providing more reliable locomotives and upgraded carriages with additional amenities, ensuring a more pleasant travel experience.

In 2025, the number of comfortable trains will increase even further. PKP Intercity will receive 38 more new locomotives with a speed of 160 km/h—three of which were already delivered in January. The number of modernized carriages will also grow steadily. By the end of the year, the carrier plans to receive 119 modernized vehicles, including 95 multifunctional COMBO carriages. Travelers will have access to more trains tailored to the needs of people with disabilities, families with children, and cyclists.

PLN 11.8 Billion Worth of Rolling Stock Investments

Last year, PKP Intercity signed contracts with Polish manufacturers totaling PLN 11.8 billion gross. The investments include orders for:

  • 300 new carriages with a modern design (with an option for an additional 150),
  • 63 multi-system locomotives (with an option for an additional 32),
  • 35 dual-mode trainsets,
  • Modernization of 50 carriages to an upgraded COMBO standard,
  • Modernization of 150 carriages.

All contracts signed in 2024 were awarded to Polish rolling stock manufacturers and repair facilities. PKP Intercity is planning further investments, including competitive dialogue procedures as part of the procurement process for 42 double-deck electric trainsets, with an option for an additional 30 units. The carrier is also looking to expand its fleet with high-speed trains capable of 250-300 km/h.
