ENERGYORLEN Receives Its 400th LNG Cargo at the Świnoujście Terminal

ORLEN has taken delivery of its 400th cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Świnoujście terminal. Since the facility began operations, the company has imported nearly 31 million tonnes of LNG — equivalent to more than 40 billion cubic metres of natural gas after regasification. LNG purchases enable diversification of supply sources and strengthen the country’s energy security. Today, around 50% of Poland’s imported gas comes from LNG deliveries to Świnoujście.

“Our priority is to ensure ORLEN customers receive reliable and stable gas supplies. That’s why we are accelerating the pace of LNG cargo reception in Świnoujście. The growing import of liquefied natural gas confirms ORLEN’s increasingly strong position in the global LNG market. Thanks to diversified delivery routes and our own fleet of gas carriers, we can respond flexibly to market needs and optimise our portfolio to improve ORLEN’s performance in the gas trading segment,” said Grzegorz Bujnowski, Executive Director for Gas Trading at ORLEN.

The gas carrier Aktoras, which arrived Sunday evening (16 November) from the United States, delivered approximately 160,000 cubic metres of LNG — equivalent to around 1 TWh of energy or roughly 91 million cubic metres of natural gas after regasification. The combined volume of all 400 deliveries amounts to roughly 31 million tonnes of LNG, translating into more than 40 billion cubic metres of regasified gas. This volume would be sufficient to supply all gas-connected households in Poland for more than eight years.

This year alone, ORLEN has already received a record 71 deliveries in Świnoujście — ten more than during the whole of last year. In 2016, the terminal’s first full year of operation, there were only nine deliveries. ORLEN currently uses more than 99% of the terminal’s regasification capacity, which was increased this year from 6.2 to 8.3 billion cubic metres annually. This makes the Świnoujście LNG terminal one of the most efficiently utilised LNG import facilities in the world.

The increased capacity of the Świnoujście terminal — and consequently the growing number of shipments received by ORLEN — means that LNG now accounts for roughly half of all gas imported into Poland. Nearly 65% of all LNG deliveries to date have been provided under long-term DES and FOB contracts. The remaining volume was purchased on the spot market. The main import directions are Qatar and the United States, supplemented by deliveries from countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, and Equatorial Guinea.
