Nearly a quarter billion cubic meters of natural gas are stored in the Siedlemin deposit near Jarocin. A quick start-up of production from this new discovery will be made possible by the well-developed mining infrastructure in the region. ORLEN operates three deposits in the Jarocin county and will be seeking more.
The Siedlemin deposit was discovered as part of a joint project between ORLEN S.A. and ORLEN Upstream Poland at a depth of approximately 3 km. The exploratory drilling was conducted by the Exalo Drilling company from the ORLEN Group. After conducting production tests, the deposit resources were estimated at over 235 million cubic meters.
– In line with our statements, we are maximizing extraction in Poland to take advantage of all possibilities. The discovery of the Siedlemin deposit near Jarocin confirms the strong position of Greater Poland on the energy map of the country. It is in this province that ORLEN extracts the most natural gas in the country. The search and discovery of new deposits fit into our strategy, in which gas supports the energy transformation by balancing a system increasingly based on Renewable Energy Sources. ORLEN’s mining activity also brings tangible financial benefits to local communities – said Wiesław Prugar, Board Member of ORLEN for Extraction.
The Siedlemin deposit lies in a region with good prospects for hydrocarbon extraction. This is confirmed by the results of previous exploratory work and the discovery of natural gas deposits: Radlin, Klęka, Klęka E, Roszków, and Chwalęcin.
ORLEN plans to search for additional deposits in this region, where there is already a well-developed production and transmission infrastructure. This way, the company can reduce the time and costs associated with starting new resource extraction.
In Poland, oil and gas extraction companies are obliged to pay a special extraction fee. 90 percent of this fee is given back to the local governments where the extraction takes place. Revenues from the exploitation fee provide them with an additional, stable source of budget income. The total value of exploitation fees paid to the municipalities, where the activities are led by the Zielona Góra branch, in 2024, amounted to nearly 80 million PLN.
In 2023, the ORLEN Group’s extraction of natural gas amounted to 7.1 billion cubic meters, which accounted for 42 percent of the nation’s demand. The extraction in Poland amounted to 3.4 billion cubic meters, out of which, nearly 1.7 billion cubic meters were extracted in Greater Poland.
In the new strategy of the ORLEN Group until 2035, the corporation aims to increase the total extraction of natural gas from national and international deposits in 2030 to 12 billion cubic meters, including 4 billion cubic meters from deposits in Poland.
