ENERGYNew Gas Field in Greater Poland: ORLEN Begins Production in Grodzewo

The total reserves of the newly developed Grodzewo gas field, located in the Śrem municipality of the Greater Poland region, are estimated at nearly a quarter of a billion cubic meters of natural gas. The newly launched extraction operation is expected to provide gas for approximately eighteen years.

A nearly 3,000-meter-deep well was drilled as part of a joint project between ORLEN and ORLEN Upstream Polska. Once processed to meet commercial standards, the extracted gas will be fed directly into the national transmission system.

“In line with our adopted strategy, we are intensifying efforts to increase domestic gas production over the coming years. Every discovery and every well that allows us to extract this blue fuel is of great importance. The ongoing operations in Greater Poland are part of ORLEN’s broader exploration and production program focused on small fields, made possible by an optimized approach to investment in their development. Domestic resources are the most reliable source of supply for our customers and significantly contribute to our country’s energy security,” said Wiesław Prugar, Member of the ORLEN Management Board for Upstream and President of ORLEN Upstream Polska.

Greater Poland – A Strategic Energy Region

Greater Poland plays a key role on the energy map of Poland. It is here that ORLEN extracts the largest volume of natural gas in the country. The company operates 37 fields in the region using 144 wells. In 2024, gas production in the region reached around 1.64 billion cubic meters, nearly half of ORLEN’s total domestic output of 3.3 billion cubic meters for that year. The region’s potential is further confirmed by the recent discovery of the Siedlemin gas field near Jarocin in February 2025, with estimated reserves of over 235 million cubic meters.

One of the key priorities in the ORLEN Group’s 2035 Strategy is to increase total gas production from domestic and international fields to 12 billion cubic meters by 2030, including 4 billion cubic meters from Polish fields. This goal will be supported by the integration of domestic assets under ORLEN Upstream Polska, aimed at improving resource management and optimizing development programs. ORLEN Group currently holds 223 hydrocarbon exploration and production licenses in Poland.

Energy Security and Local Development

In recent years, ORLEN’s domestic natural gas production has met approximately 20% of Poland’s overall demand. Continued investment in gas extraction not only strengthens national energy security but also supports local community development. Hydrocarbon production generates an exploitation fee, based on production volume, which is distributed among local municipalities (60%), counties and provinces (15% each), and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (10%).

These revenues provide a significant financial boost for local governments, helping fund community projects and infrastructure investments throughout the entire period of extraction. This enables local authorities to plan and implement more development initiatives that directly benefit residents.
