Netflix shares have risen by 30% since the company reported its Q1 results, which significantly exceeded analysts’ expectations. However, investors will now focus on revenue and profitability since Netflix has stopped reporting subscriber numbers.

Neil Wilson, Content Strategist for Investors at Saxo Bank, notes that after the strong Q1 performance and continued share price gains, investors expect impressive Q2 results from Netflix and a possible upward revision of annual forecasts.

In April, Netflix reported substantially higher profits for Q1 and 13% revenue growth, which drove a solid stock price increase. The company attributed the better-than-expected revenue growth to higher advertising income and subscription fees.

This was a result of the January decision to increase prices — raising the monthly fee for the standard plan to $17.99, the premium plan to $24.99, and the basic plan to $7.99. Netflix reported revenue of $10.54 billion, surpassing Wall Street estimates. Despite this, the company maintained its annual revenue forecast in the range of $43.5 to $44.5 billion.

Q1 was the first quarter when Netflix did not disclose detailed subscriber data — a key metric that previously influenced stock price movements at earnings releases. Consequently, investors are now focusing on more traditional measures of company health — revenue, profit margins, and advertising income.

Advertising Revenue

Netflix is increasingly relying on advertising revenue to boost net profits. This growth strategy requires less capital expenditure and is key to the company reaching its free cash flow target of $8 billion this year.

“Improving the tools and services we offer advertisers is a key goal for 2025,” Netflix said in April, shortly after launching its own advertising technology platform in the U.S., with plans to roll it out to other markets later. “We believe this platform is the foundation of our long-term advertising strategy. Over time, it will enable us to offer better measurement tools, more precise targeting, innovative ad formats, and advanced programmatic buying processes.”

Margin Growth

Management forecasts a 29% operating margin for the full year 2025, and 33% for Q2. This points to increased cost pressure in the second half of the year due to higher sales and marketing expenses, and expected growth in content production costs — especially related to live sports streaming rights. Any changes in profit margin forecasts could significantly impact Netflix’s stock valuation.

Uncertainty also surrounds the threat by former President Trump to impose tariffs on films produced outside the U.S. Neil Wilson advises paying attention to any management commentary during the earnings call, although this is unlikely to be reflected yet in financial forecasts.

What to Expect for Q2?

Wall Street analysts estimate Q2 revenue slightly above $11 billion, representing 15.6% year-over-year growth.

Pretax profit is expected to rise 41% to $3.55 billion, while earnings per share are forecast to increase to $7.07 from $6.61 in the previous quarter.

Analysts Raise Price Targets

KeyBanc raised its Netflix price target from $1,070 to $1,390, while Canaccord Genuity increased its forecast to $1,575, approaching the highest market target of $1,600. Goldman Sachs and Barclays also recently raised their price targets ahead of Netflix’s earnings announcement.

However, not all analysts are optimistic. Seaport Global changed its recommendation to “Hold.” JPMorgan lowered its rating in May, citing valuation concerns after the stock price rose roughly 40% since the start of the year and 90% over the last 12 months. Currently, Netflix shares trade at over 50 times forward earnings — well above competitors and the five-year average.

“Managing an investment portfolio requires a strategic approach that does not rely on a single asset or company. The key is risk diversification across sectors, asset classes, and markets. Quarterly earnings reports are invaluable reference points for assessing company health but should be just one of many decision factors. To minimize risk and maximize return potential, it’s worth combining stable, low-risk investments with more dynamic assets that may offer higher returns. Diversification provides flexibility, allowing portfolio adjustments to changing market conditions and better coping with unpredictable fluctuations in individual company results,” summarizes Aleksander Mrózek, Key Account Manager for the CEE region at Saxo Bank.
