mBank announced on Thursday that its net profit in 2026 will decline by 800–900 million PLN as a result of the increase in corporate income tax (CIT) for the banking sector. The statement came just hours after President Karol Nawrocki signed the new legislation into law.

The bank noted that the final impact of the higher CIT will depend on next year’s gross profit. At the same time, the change in tax rates will increase deferred tax assets by 125 million PLN, partially offsetting the negative effect on earnings.

CIT for Banks to Rise to 30%

Under the new law, the CIT rate for banks will rise from 19% to 30% starting 1 January 2026. In subsequent years, the tax will gradually be reduced to 26% in 2027 and to 23% from 2028 onward.

The Ministry of Finance estimates that the higher CIT will generate an additional 6.5 billion PLN in revenue for the state budget in 2026. Over the next decade, the government expects more than 20 billion PLN from this measure, intended to finance security and healthcare expenditures.

Banking Sector Strongly Protests

The Polish Bank Association (ZBP) criticized the president’s decision, calling it “surprising.” ZBP President Tadeusz Białek said the change is unconstitutional.

According to the association, the higher CIT will weaken banks’ ability to build capital and reduce dividend payouts. ZBP warns that the new rules will also diminish the sector’s lending capacity and, in the longer term, slow economic growth.
