The management board of Poczta Polska (Polish Post) has announced an ambitious Transformation Plan aimed at transforming one of the oldest companies in Poland into a modern courier, retail, finance, and digital company. Given the deteriorating financial situation of the company, these changes are not only needed but are crucial for rebuilding the market position of Poczta Polska, which plays the role of the designated operator for providing universal service.
Key areas of transformation
The transformation of Poczta Polska will take place in several stages, the first of which, called “Poczta 1.0”, will cover the most urgent changes planned for this year. These will focus on modernizing IT systems, improving the quality of postal services, and optimizing employment. Vice President, Dariusz Ĺšpiewak, emphasized that digitization is a key element of the transformation aimed at eliminating technology debts associated with outdated systems, some of which are more than 20 years old. As part of this process, a Shared IT Services Center will be created, enabling process optimization and automation, as well as effective organization management.
Sebastian Mikosz, President of Poczta Polska, pointed out that the digital revolution and changing customer needs forced the company to take decisive steps. “Today we have started the change process, thanks to which Poczta will be transformed into a modern and self-supporting company,” said Mikosz.
Adapting branches to local needs
As part of the transformation, Poczta Polska’s branches will be adapted to the specific needs of local communities. Branches in smaller municipalities will become Citizen Service Centers, offering a broad range of services, from parcel pick-up, pension payouts, to the issuance of documents like passports. The largest branches in the cities will serve not only as post offices but also as social, cultural, and commercial centers, becoming de-facto shopping galleries.
Employment optimization
One of the key elements of the transformation is cutting bureaucracy. The announced Voluntary Departure Plan for administration employees aims to reduce costs, which currently constitute as much as 65% of all costs of Poczta Polska. Employees who decide to leave will receive an equivalent of 12 monthly salaries and can start a new job the next day. The aim of these actions is to make Poczta Polska an attractive employer that not only manages its resources effectively but also adapts to modern standards.
Strengths of Poczta Polska
Despite the challenges, Poczta Polska has many assets that can help it regain its market position. With over 7,600 branches across Poland, the company has a unique distribution capability, and its brand is recognizable and enjoys public trust. Thanks to logistic experience and well-located properties in the centers of the most important cities, Poczta Polska has the potential to become a significant player in the courier, express, and parcel service (CEP) market.
According to the plan, changes in the CEP and financial services areas will be implemented next year, aimed at further strengthening Poczta Polska’s position in the market.
