FM Logistic Polska has become the first logistics company in the world to deploy Google AlphaEvolve, an advanced AI tool designed to support the creation and optimisation of algorithms, including those used in logistics. The technology has improved picking-route efficiency by more than 10% and reduced the annual distance travelled by warehouse operators by over 15,000 kilometres, without additional investment in infrastructure or fleet capacity.
Growing operational complexity and pressure to improve efficiency are leading more transport, forwarding and logistics companies to adopt AI solutions that support day-to-day processes. The ability to increase productivity without expanding infrastructure or resources has become particularly important. This is the direction of FM Logistic’s project developed in cooperation with Google.
FM Logistic is among the first companies worldwide to test Google AlphaEvolve, a Google DeepMind solution that uses AI to autonomously create algorithms. The company deployed the technology in warehouse operations, becoming the first supply-chain organisation to use the solution on such a scale. The project was presented at Google Cloud Next in Las Vegas as an example of the practical use of AI in logistics.
“FM Logistic’s collaboration demonstrates that artificial intelligence can now support the resolution of highly complex operational challenges in real-time environments. Logistics is an area with enormous potential for practical AI deployments, particularly where operational scale, speed and continuous process optimisation are critical. FM Logistic’s project is an example of using AI to create solutions that deliver measurable business and operational results,” says Anant Nawalgaria, Group AI Product Manager & Engineer at Google.
Real-Time Operational Optimisation
The project was implemented at one of FM Logistic’s warehouses in Poland, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The operation covers more than 17,700 picking locations.
The key challenge was to group orders and plan routes in a way that would minimise the distance travelled by operators and warehouse vehicles. At the same time, the company needed to further improve a process that had already reached a very high level of optimisation.
“In logistics, the ability to quickly test and implement new operational solutions is becoming increasingly important. Through our cooperation with Google, we were able to use AI to generate and evaluate thousands of order-management algorithm variants, allowing us to achieve a measurable efficiency improvement in the complex e-commerce order-picking process,” says Mateusz Klimowicz, Robotic Process Automation Manager at FM Logistic.
Thousands of Algorithm Variants
Google AlphaEvolve generated and tested thousands of logistics-algorithm variants. The solution used real operational data and business and operational criteria defined by FM Logistic. The system assessed, among other factors, route length, picking productivity and compliance with process requirements.
The deployment delivered an efficiency improvement of more than 10% compared with the previously highly optimised solution. It also reduced the distance travelled inside the warehouse by more than 15,000 kilometres annually. The improvement was achieved without additional investment in infrastructure or a larger fleet of warehouse vehicles.
“The technology helped us develop a better algorithm to support the planning of picking routes. The final outcome is a fully auditable algorithm that we can continue to develop and scale. Artificial intelligence does not manage the warehouse or replace existing operational systems; it simply enables us to reach a higher level of efficiency,” Klimowicz adds.
Poland Develops AI Solutions for Logistics
The implementation was presented at Google Cloud Next in Las Vegas as an example of the practical use of AI in operational logistics. The solution is now being scaled to further FM Logistic operations in Europe and the Americas.
The company is also developing additional AI applications for warehouse operations, including solutions that support product-placement optimisation and further improvements in logistics processes.
The implementation forms part of FM Logistic’s broader strategy to improve supply-chain efficiency through the use of new technologies.
