SECURITYGeneral Kukuła: NATO Is a Commitment, Not a Shelter — Poland Must Build Its Own Strength

I believe that Poland largely possesses the necessary capabilities to respond effectively to threats that may arise against our state. We will never be 100% prepared for every challenge, as their nature is difficult to foresee. However, we are on an excellent path — not only to confront the immediate threats we face today, but also those that may emerge over the coming decades. I see the modernization process as comprehensive, covering multiple strategic domains.

Of course, the acquisition of large, heavy military equipment is the most visually impressive element. But the true core of our current modernization portfolio lies in future-oriented technologies: drones, artificial intelligence, cyber defence capabilities, and the development of cyber-military infrastructure. Cyber defence may not yet be decisive at the tactical level of warfare, but it already plays a critical role in ensuring the state’s resilience to cyber threats. A prime example is the Cyberspace Defence Forces Component Command (DKWOC), which has become a benchmark for comparable structures elsewhere.

“It is certainly always easier to support the strong — but the very nature of NATO says something different. If we are part of an international alliance, we can expect support if we are attacked,” General Wiesław Kukuła, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, told eNewsroom. “At the same time, every state has a duty to show solidarity and help others when they face danger. It is difficult to measure that in terms of strength — the world is based on principles and commitments we accepted when joining NATO. The world is not safe today, and likely never will be. For years, we lived in an illusion of security — yet history is either war or the moment of preparing for it. Today we live in what the Polish Prime Minister called pre-war times. Whether these times do not turn into a conflict depends on us — on how we build the resilience of the state and the strength of the Polish Armed Forces,” General Kukuła emphasized.
