Samer A., a former board member of OTS Switzerland GmbH (Orlen Group), has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates. The arrest was based on an international warrant issued by Polish authorities.
Samer A. was the former president of Orlen Trading Switzerland, appointed by Daniel Obajtek. As reported by “Rzeczpospolita,” the Internal Security Agency (ABW) in 2022 attempted to block Awad’s appointment to the position due to suspicions of his connections with extremist Arab groups, raising national security concerns. He was also under investigation for VAT fraud.
Samer A. is suspected of acting to the detriment of OTS Switzerland GmbH and Orlen S.A. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw accuses him, along with Marcin O., of signing a series of unfavorable contracts for the purchase of crude oil, allegedly causing a loss of approximately 370 million US dollars.
Both suspects were sought by Polish law enforcement based on a European Arrest Warrant and a so-called red notice from Interpol. Both Samer A. and Marcin O. were evading Polish justice.
Following the arrest, Polish authorities have initiated the extradition process for Samer A. to Poland. A formal request has been submitted and is currently under review by Polish and Emirati authorities.
