Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities carried out a raid on Friday on the home and office of Andriy Yermak, the chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelensky and one of the most influential figures in the country. According to investigators, Yermak appears under the codename “Ali Baba” in an ongoing corruption probe, CNN reports.
The raid is part of a broader investigation into Energoatom, the largest corruption scandal of Zelensky’s presidency. The case concerns the alleged embezzlement of 100 million dollars in the energy sector, which has already led to the resignation of two ministers and charges against eight individuals, including a former business partner of Zelensky, Newsweek notes.
Andriy Yermak has stated that he is fully cooperating with law enforcement while rejecting any allegations of wrongdoing. The situation, however, has sparked a strong public reaction — according to polls, 70% of Ukrainians support his resignation, despite Yermak’s central role in peace talks with the United States and his management of key diplomatic activities during the ongoing war with Russia.
