SECURITYCutting-Edge Technologies for National Security: Quantum Optical Cryptography System

On March 17, 2025, a press conference was held at the Military University of Technology Club in Warsaw to present the findings of research on the application of quantum key distribution in state communications. The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski, Deputy Ministers Stanisław Wziątek and Paweł Olszewski, as well as representatives of the Polish Armed Forces.

During the meeting, the significance of implementing modern technologies for national security was discussed. Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the growing importance of data security and database access, highlighting the necessity of their effective protection. The presented quantum communication solutions aim to enhance digital independence and the security of transmitted information.

A key element of the event was the presentation of a pioneering connection between the Military University of Technology and the Ministry of Digital Affairs using quantum key distribution (QKD). This technology ensures complete resistance to interception of transmitted information, marking a significant step towards improving state communication security. Deputy Prime Minister Gawkowski pointed out the broad applications of quantum technologies, which could be utilized not only in military systems but also in public administration, transportation, healthcare, and the banking sector.

The project, under which the Modular Systems of Quantum Optical Cryptography were developed, was carried out by the Military University of Technology in collaboration with TELDAT Sp. z o.o. and the NASK National Research Institute. Funding was provided by the National Centre for Research and Development as part of the research program for national defense and security. The project also involved the Ministry of Digital Affairs and entities specializing in quantum technologies.

The project was overseen by the Cyberspace Defense Forces, which established new data transmission security standards. The system has been tested under operational conditions and has achieved the highest, ninth level of technological readiness on the applicable scale. The project is now ready for acceptance by the NCBR, with its formal completion planned for the end of the first quarter of 2025.

The Polish Armed Forces recognize quantum technologies as a key solution capable of transforming modern battlefields and enhancing the nation’s cybersecurity. Given their potential applications in both military and civilian sectors, Poland aims to maintain an active position in the development of this technological field.
