BUSINESSCompany debt in Poland is increasing - which regions are in the most trouble?

The most spectacular advancements, compared to the July 2024 ranking, were made by the regions of Łódź, Opole and Lublin, which now holds the leading position in terms of reliability. An analysis of current data on corporate debt in Poland indicates increasing financial problems for businesses. A ranking prepared by the Reliable Company, in collaboration with the National Debt Register Bureau of Economic Information, reveals that the particularly difficult situations are in Mazovia, which not only has the highest debt per 1,000 companies but also the highest average debt per entrepreneur.

Companies’ arrears recorded in the National Debt Register (KRD) amount to over 10.3 billion PLN, of which a staggering 2.4 billion falls on companies registered in Mazovia. The second place is taken by entrepreneurs from Silesia, whose unpaid obligations amount to 1.3 billion PLN. The podium is completed by companies from Greater Poland, which owe their creditors 1.1 billion PLN.

“The total amount of debt isn’t the most important in our ranking. Instead, we distributed the debt over 1,000 companies operating in a given region. We also took into account the average value of obligations per company and the percentage of indebted companies in the region. In each of these categories, we awarded points: the lower the debt and fewer debtors, the higher the position in the list. The final ranking was created based on the sum of points obtained in the three analyzed areas.” explains Sandra Czerwińska, an expert at the Reliable Company.

Companies registered in Mazovia currently have the highest debt per 1,000 companies – 4.3 million PLN, which means a further increase compared to the result from half a year ago (4.1 million PLN in July 2024). Silesia also noted an increase in debt – from 4 million PLN in July to 4.1 million PLN in the current ranking. Other high results include Pomerania – 3.7 million PLN, Lower Silesia – 3.7 million PLN, and Greater Poland – 3.6 million PLN.

The lowest results can be boasted by entrepreneurs from Podlasie (2.3 million PLN), Lublin (2.5 million PLN) and Podkarpackie (2.5 million PLN).

“Increasing companies’ debt in the provinces indicates serious financial liquidity problems. Entrepreneurs are grappling with high operating costs, resulting in growing liabilities and problems with settling mounting arrears.” says Sandra Czerwińska.

Mazovian companies recorded the highest average debt per entrepreneur – 44,000 PLN, which represents an increase compared to July 2024, when it was 43,000 PLN. Most provinces show a similar upward trend, including the Wielkopolskie province with a current result of 41,000 PLN, Podkarpackie (40.4 thousand PLN), Małopolskie (39.8 thousand PLN), or Śląskie (39 thousand PLN).

Currently, the lowest average debt is recorded by: Lubelskie – 33.5 thousand PLN, Zachodniopomorskie – 33.7 thousand PLN, and Opolskie 34.4 thousand PLN.

The largest number of indebted companies relative to the total number of businesses operating in a given region was noted in Silesia – 10.5%. In the Kuyavian-Pomeranian province, companies in financial trouble can be found just as often, as their percentage there is 10.2%, similar to Lower Silesia – 10%. Right after these three regions in the ranking is Mazovian province – 9.7%, Pomeranian – 9.6%, and Lubusz 9.5%. The lowest percentage of financially unstable companies was registered in Podkarpackie – 6.2%, Małopolskie – 6.5%, and Podlasie – 6.6%.

“These data show that in some regions even every tenth company has financial problems. This is important information for entrepreneurs, because cooperation with such a partner can mean payment delays, and even loss of money. If our contractor has trouble, it can also affect our business – a lack of payment for services or goods can disrupt our financial liquidity. That’s why it’s always worth checking the companies we want to cooperate with, and use tools that help avoid problems. Caution in business is a premise today.” says Adam Łącki, President of the Management Board of the National Debt Register Bureau of Economic Information.

The data shows that although some regions stabilize the level of debt, the problem does not disappear. Entrepreneurs often have to look for alternative sources of financing or renegotiate the terms of debt repayment.

“Current data shows deepening financial difficulties of companies, especially in Mazovia and Silesia. Lublin remains a leader in financial reliability, but even there disturbing changes are visible. The growth of debt and increasing average amounts of obligations may translate into further problems of entrepreneurs, as well as limiting the investment possibilities of companies. It will be crucial to monitor the financial situation of companies and respond appropriately to changes.” says Sandra Czerwińska, an expert at the Reliable Company.
