Bitcoin drops to 87,000 USD – is this the end of the bull market or a buying opportunity?

INVESTINGBitcoin drops to 87,000 USD – is this the end of the bull market or a buying opportunity?

Since Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States, the cryptocurrency market has experienced significant fluctuations. The price of Bitcoin has dropped by more than 20%—from nearly $110,000 to $87,000. This sharp correction has led to a decline in the stock prices of companies associated with the digital asset sector. Over the past five days, shares of Coinbase Global (COIN) have lost more than 20% of their value, while Robinhood Markets (HOOD) stocks have fallen by 24%.

However, the market situation may change with the new leadership of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Paul Atkins, nominated by President Trump and regarded as an ally of the crypto industry, has taken over as chairman. One of the first key actions of the SEC under his leadership was to conclude investigations into Coinbase and Robinhood, removing one of the biggest regulatory threats facing these companies. The new administration could mark the end of the “regulation through enforcement” approach and create more favorable conditions for the industry’s growth.

The market turmoil has also affected cryptocurrency mining companies. In the U.S. market, Riot Platforms (RIOT) lost 6.71%, MARA Holdings (MARA) fell 10.62%, Core Scientific (CORZ) declined 1.01%, and CleanSpark (CLSK) dropped 8.43%. Faced with declining mining profitability, many of these firms have opted to diversify their operations. Artificial intelligence is emerging as a new area of interest for cryptocurrency miners. These companies have advanced computing infrastructure, including high-performance data centers, modern cooling systems, and access to cheap energy. These resources can be repurposed to support demanding AI-related computing processes, potentially creating a new revenue stream for firms traditionally associated with cryptocurrencies.

For investors wondering whether the current cryptocurrency market declines present a buying opportunity, it is crucial to balance risk and potential rewards. On the one hand, fundamentally strong companies such as Coinbase may now be attractively valued, and the SEC’s shift in approach could benefit the sector. On the other hand, the industry remains highly volatile, and companies like MicroStrategy, whose performance is closely tied to Bitcoin’s price, remain particularly exposed to price fluctuations. Nonetheless, for investors who believe in the long-term growth of the cryptocurrency market, current valuations may offer an interesting opportunity to enter or increase their positions.
