The job market today is significantly different from that of 20 or even 10 years ago. Changing professions, retraining or working in several places is nothing unusual. In the face of growing economic variability, technological revolutions and unpredictable crises, a professional Plan B becomes not only an option, but increasingly a necessity.

We are witnessing a change in approach to professional careers. Poles are increasingly opting for alternative sources of income and developing competencies outside a traditional full-time job. Studies conducted by SW Research on behalf of Gi Group Poland show that 45.2% of us take on additional tasks beyond our main source of income. Temporary work is mainly chosen by young people from large cities. There are several reasons for this, including a need to improve the financial situation and a change in awareness. Full-time employment is seen as one of the many solutions, not the only one, in career development.

Interestingly, the Randstad 2023 report indicates that as many as 36% of Poles have considered changing their profession or seeking additional sources of income, and among people aged 25-35, this proportion rises to 45%. Professional Plan B is no longer the domain only of those working in technology-related industries or freelancing, but is becoming common among representatives of various sectors.

Why should you have a Plan B? The answer is simple and very mundane – it’s about financial security. Losing a job from one day to the next can be a difficult experience, linked not only to the loss of financial stability but also the loss of peace and a sense of security. People who develop alternative sources of income have more financial flexibility.

Many people decide on an additional occupation in order to pursue their passions or gain new skills. Freelance work, consulting, blogging or selling handicrafts are just a few examples of combining earning with personal development.

Labor markets are constantly evolving – automation, artificial intelligence, or climate change can impact some professions. Plan B is a way to adapt to new conditions and reduce the risk of professional burnout.

More and more people are working as freelancers in industries such as IT, marketing, copywriting, graphic design or consulting. For many of them, this is a combination of work and passion. A lot of people start their own small businesses, combining work with a passion for healthy eating, tourism or education.

Changes in the labor market are inevitable. Data shows that Poles are becoming increasingly aware of the need for professional development in various directions. A professional Plan B is not only a way to ensure financial security, but also a path to professional fulfillment and greater independence.

It is important to remember that having a Plan B today does not mean failure, on the contrary, it is proof of understanding the labor market and the ability to adapt to the changes it undergoes. An alternative career plan is an opportunity for development, flexibility and better management of your professional future.
