The construction of the Baltic Power offshore wind farm has entered another critical phase. The investor has announced the completion of all transition pieces, which connect the foundations to the turbines and offshore substations. At the same time, work is continuing at sea on turbine installation, as well as the laying of export and inter-array cables. According to the project timeline, electricity from Poland’s first offshore wind farm is expected to begin flowing later this year.
The installation of the transition pieces was completed just one month after the final of 78 monopiles was driven into the seabed of the Baltic Sea. These monopiles form the foundations for the wind turbines and offshore electrical substations. Reaching this milestone marks a clear transition from the foundation phase to intensive offshore installation works.
Transition pieces play a crucial technical role. They connect the monopiles with the main turbine structures and the power infrastructure. Each unit is approximately 20 meters long and can weigh up to 350 tonnes. They are individually designed for specific locations, taking into account environmental conditions and structural requirements at sea.
These structures are far more than simple steel cylinders. They are equipped with a range of additional components essential for the future operation of the wind farm. These include access platforms that enable technicians to safely disembark from transport vessels, crane systems for handling tools and equipment, and internal electrical installations powering the turbines. These features will ensure efficient servicing and maintenance of the offshore installation.
A significant aspect of the project is the involvement of domestic industry. Components used in the production of the transition pieces were manufactured in facilities located in Żary, Niemodlin, and Łęknica. The production process relied largely on steel sourced from Polish mills. This highlights that Baltic Power is not only a key investment in the energy transition but also a project that supports the domestic supply chain and local manufacturers.
The progress of the Baltic Power construction carries both symbolic and strategic importance. This investment is set to become Poland’s first operational offshore wind farm, marking a new chapter in the country’s energy sector. With the growing importance of renewable energy and the need to diversify the energy mix, the launch of this project will send a strong signal to the entire offshore wind market in Poland.
Work is now focused not only on support structures but also on critical energy transmission infrastructure. Turbines are being installed, and inter-array and export cables are being laid on the seabed to enable the transfer of generated electricity to the onshore power grid. If the current schedule is maintained, the first electricity from Baltic Power will be delivered to the grid before the end of the year.
