Apple considered using artificial intelligence to automate part of the work handled by AppleCare, according to Bloomberg. The proposal, which could have affected around 5,000 roles, was ultimately paused. The discussion took place as Apple began a broader reorganisation focused on simplifying management, increasing engineers’ responsibility and accelerating product development.

AppleCare was a natural area for automation

Customer support includes many repetitive tasks such as account recovery, device configuration, basic troubleshooting and questions about warranties or subscriptions. AI systems can increasingly search support databases, summarise cases and draft responses, making support one of the first areas where large technology companies can test automation at scale.

For Apple, however, the calculation is not only about cost. The company has built a premium brand partly around customer service, which means excessive automation could create service-quality risks if automated systems fail to resolve more complex cases.

The reorganisation goes beyond customer support

The AppleCare proposal was one element of a wider internal restructuring. Apple has also been reviewing layers of management and project coordination in engineering teams. Smaller reductions have affected management roles and teams connected with products including Siri and Vision Pro.

The broader goal is to shorten the path between engineers and decision-makers, concentrate resources on priority projects and make product development more flexible.

AI is changing technology companies internally

The debate about AI often focuses on products offered to customers. Apple’s internal discussions show that the technology is also changing how technology companies operate. Software development, documentation, marketing, customer support and administrative work can all be partly automated.

The scale of the employment impact depends on whether AI is used as an assistant to existing staff or as a system that can complete entire workflows independently. The paused AppleCare plan illustrates that difference: using AI to help support agents work faster is very different from redesigning the operation around a much smaller human team.

For Apple, the final decision therefore involves not only technical capability but also service quality, brand positioning and the pace at which customers accept automated interactions.
