According to Adam Bielan, PiS MEP, President Karol Nawrocki has swiftly established excellent working relations with U.S. President Donald Trump. He emphasized that good contacts and effective diplomacy may prove crucial for Poland’s security, particularly in light of Trump’s declarations regarding the U.S. military presence in Poland. Bielan also highlighted Trump’s influence on both Vladimir Putin and NATO’s European allies.
“President Karol Nawrocki quickly built excellent working relations with President Trump. The visit held before the May 1 elections helped a lot. I participated in both visits, and I can say that the September 3 meeting was full of concrete results. Thanks to these good contacts and President Nawrocki’s effective diplomacy, Poland is certainly safer today,” Bielan told Newseria.
On September 3 this year, President Karol Nawrocki visited the White House at Trump’s invitation. According to the Presidential Chancellery, the two leaders discussed security in the context of military, energy, and economic cooperation, with reference to the Three Seas Initiative – an international format aimed at developing transport, energy, and digital infrastructure between the northern and southern regions of Eastern EU countries. Nawrocki also raised the issue of support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia as part of a joint stance between Poland and Europe.
“The matter of peace talks in Ukraine was, of course, raised during the working lunch between the presidents. President Trump is probably the only politician in the world today who can at least attempt to pressure Putin into negotiations for, if not peace, then at least a ceasefire. There is clearly growing frustration in Washington with the Russian leader’s stance,” Bielan said during last week’s session of the European Parliament.
He also reminded listeners of Trump’s influence on European countries.
“It would be undiplomatic for me to disclose what President Trump said to us in a closed setting. However, I refer you to his official statements: he was already urging the European Union during his first term, calling on NATO’s European allies to spend more on their defense. At that time it didn’t succeed, Trump left, lost the election, and Joe Biden took his place. But with Trump’s return to the White House, NATO for the first time in history decided to reach 5% of GDP in defense spending as soon as possible,” the politician noted.
At the NATO summit in The Hague this June, allied leaders adopted a declaration setting a new defense spending standard. They pledged to invest 5% of GDP, including 3.5% on military needs and 1.5% on defense and security, such as infrastructure and industry. Previously, the benchmark had been 2% of GDP.
“It is largely thanks to President Trump that Western Europeans have finally been pushed, at least in theory, to take Europe’s defense seriously,” Bielan stressed.
In a letter published Saturday on Truth Social, Donald Trump addressed all NATO members, declaring he was ready to impose strong sanctions on Russia provided that all countries stop buying Russian oil. He added that imposing high tariffs on China by all NATO states would also help bring the war in Ukraine to an end. Among NATO members, Hungary and Slovakia continue to buy Russian oil under EU sanction exemptions, while Turkey also maintains such imports.
During last week’s discussion, Bielan cited U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who during a visit to Europe accused the European Union of hypocrisy for continuing to purchase Russian raw materials.
“The EU’s trade agreement with Mercosur, adopted by the European Commission on Wednesday, means that Brazil – which buys vast amounts of fertilizer from Russia – will be able to export goods produced with those fertilizers duty-free to the EU. This is yet another reason to block the Mercosur deal, at least until Brazil stops importing fertilizers and feeding money that is then used to attack Ukraine,” the MEP said.
In his view, the good relations between the Polish and American presidents will also be significant in the economic sphere. After the September White House visit, President Karol Nawrocki announced that he had received an invitation to next year’s G20 summit in Miami, Florida.
“For many years, various Polish politicians sought an invitation to the G20 talks. Now we are taking advantage of the fact that the United States will assume the presidency of the group on December 1, and President Nawrocki will attend the G20 summit next year in Miami. This is a major success, and we will strive to ensure that Poland’s presence in the G20 becomes as permanent as possible,” Bielan emphasized.
