As a society, the majority of us declare that our incomes allow us to pay our current bills. Only one in seven households admit that they are unable to settle all charges – this is according to the latest study of the National Debt Register “Polish households’ wallets under pressure from rising prices”. Meanwhile, over 2 million consumers are registered in the KRD. Altogether, they owe a total of PLN 44.5 billion. These are various types of overdue bills, housing costs, credit instalments and other financial obligations.

Every home has bills to pay, but as the latest National Debt Register study shows, Polish households declare that they handle this duty fairly well. The respondents questioned by KRD, persons aged between 18 and 74 years who either pay all the fees independently (65%) or do it jointly with another household member (35%), are thus perfectly knowledgeable about their family’s financial situation and the costs they have to bear.

According to the survey, 80-90% of the respondents receive monthly or quarterly bills for electricity/gas (89.6%), telephone/Internet (89.4%), water and sewage (83.3%) and rubbish collection (79.1%).

About half of the respondents have to pay RTV subscription fee and/or cable/satellite/Internet TV (61.2%), compulsory third party liability/home and home/life/car insurance (55%), rent (49.2%) and heating bills (45.5%).

In addition, every third man and every fourth woman pay for various types of subscriptions. In addition, 25.5% also have an obligation in the form of a cash loan, and 11.9% – a mortgage.

There are also regular medicines on the list of recurring expenses – nearly every second respondent (46.2% indications) have to bear such costs. Every fifth person regularly purchases periodical tickets for city or rail transport (19.5%). Nearly every tenth (11.2%) pays tuition fees for university, school/pre-school/private kindergarten, and also for rent (10.7%). Some also own a subscription to the gym, fitness club or swimming pool (9.7%).

Notably, people aged 40 have the biggest problems. On the other hand, people who are able to pay bills from their own income, and even afford larger expenses and save some savings, are usually young Poles (18-24 years old). However, this is due to the fact that they still live with their parents, so they are not the ones who bear the greatest responsibility for incurring costs.

As the KRD study shows, Poles pay the most for a mortgage which averages at PLN 1863. Renting a flat is slightly less, averaging at PLN 1282, and for a cash loan/consumer credit card – PLN 1038. The average charge for the rent, as the respondents declare, revolves around PLN 620. Tuition for university, school/pre-school/private kindergarten is a cost of PLN 576, and various types of compulsory third party liability/home and home/life/car

Insurance costs approximately PLN 516. The next PLN 300 are bills for heating and electricity/gas. Subscriptions for the gym/fitness club or swimming pool comes lower down the list of expenditures being around PLN 190 also, regular medication is PLN 170. Bills for water and sewage are to the tune of PLN 160. Telephone and internet bills are usually PLN 148. A periodical ticket for city or/and rail transport costs PLN 131, and rubbish collection bills are around PLN 94. TV licence, bills for cable/satellite/Internet TV , which is paid by 61.2% of the respondents, costs PLN 92, and other types of subscriptions – PLN 83.

“People in rural households (18%), that contain 5 or more people (22% of them say they cannot settle bills) are having the most trouble with making their payments. Also, these where monthly spending on food amounts to PLN 4001 to 5000 (37% indications), and where the net monthly income does not exceed PLN 3,000 (36.8%).

As one can see from the survey, what respondents would pay first if they lack money to pay their all bills are housing obligations and those related to health. So, first in line would be the mortgage (88.2%), rental charge (87.9%), rent (80.5%), bills for electricity/gas (78.1%) and regular medicines (72.1%).
