During a speech in Michigan marking the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s second term as president, he addressed several key economic and political issues that sparked widespread reactions. Trump once again criticized Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, asserting that he personally “knows more about interest rates” than the head of the Fed. He accused Powell of being ineffective, although he clarified that he does not currently intend to remove him from office.
Tariff Policy and the Auto Industry
A major highlight of the speech was Trump’s trade policy, particularly concerning the automotive industry. He announced a temporary suspension of the 25% tariffs on auto parts for two years, a move aimed at giving car manufacturers time to relocate production back to the United States. Trump warned that companies failing to comply with this policy could be “crushed.”
Tax Reform Extension and New Proposals
Trump also revealed plans to extend his 2017 tax reform, while introducing new proposals such as the elimination of taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits. According to the president, these changes are designed to improve the financial well-being of ordinary Americans. He used the occasion to pressure Republicans who oppose his agenda, urging voters to vote them out of office.
Mixed Reactions and Market Impact
The speech received mixed reactions. Trump’s comments sparked market uncertainty, particularly due to his critique of Powell and the announcement of changes to tariffs. As a result, some Stellantis plants in the U.S. and Canada temporarily halted production, leading to short-term layoffs. On the other hand, labor unions, especially the United Auto Workers (UAW), responded positively, seeing Trump’s policies as a potential opportunity to restore American jobs.
Political Landscape and Public Support
Despite the celebration of his 100th day in office during his second term, polls show Trump’s approval ratings have fallen to 39–41%. His presidency so far has been marked by aggressive regulatory changes, cuts in federal spending overseen by Elon Musk, and active efforts to redefine international relations, including those with NATO, Panama, Canada, and Greenland.
Immigration remains one of the few areas where Trump continues to enjoy relatively strong public support.
